The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
German Expressionism was a film movement that showcased stark contrast and sharp angles and twisting, creepy plotlines. This film highlights all of that. It's silent, which might make it hard to watch for some, but if you can sit through it, it's definitely worth it. I find it sad to have to watch silent movies on DVD with an unchangeable soundtrack, since one of the joys of silent movies was that the musical accompaniment was often the spontaneous creation of the movie house's pianist, but I suppose a set soundtrack is better than not having the film at all. This also includes one of the original twist endings.
My Netflix rating: 4 stars
